Going to bed and waking up hungry is an experience felt by far too many in our community. Those without enough to eat, or without the resources to do something about it, have been our neighbors for a long time. Most importantly the faces of those who are hungry are not readily identified. Organizations that work with people on an emergency food basis see the escalating trends and the critical issues around hunger, a condition that is intolerable, but solvable, and one that must be addressed.
This challenge is made worse because the need for emergency food programs has been increasing dramatically over the past several years. There were nearly 1,000,000 visits to Twin Cities metro area food shelves in 2007, and over 1,000,000 meals served to those in need. And this year, food shelf usage in the metro area has risen 14% (to date) over the same period as last year.
Phone-A-Thon: Please call (952) 406-8214 from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, November 26, 2009. Volunteers will be standing by to take phone donations throughout the event. All proceeds will be distributed to the participating Hunger Initiative partners.
